Codes and conventions

What do we mean by cinematic story and form?

Codes and conventions of a screen story

Working with a partner, write down the codes and conventions you would expect in a horror film – giving examples from horror films – and a romantic comedy. Make clear distinctions between the two genres.
·         The colour red to connote blood.
·         Black and grey to connote dullness and shadows which could be a bit scary.
·         Shocking scenes which creates a jump scare to the audience.
·         Spooky music which creates tensions towards the jump scares.
·         Gory scenes
·         Possessed characters
·         Supernatural characters
·         Creepy, crawly things
·         Darkness
·         Fear of death
·         Scary places
·         Suspense
·         Lightning and thunder
·         Fear of the unusual
Romantic comedy
·         Places which are seen as romantic; New York, Paris, Vienna, London, Rome, Prague.
·         Two people who fall in love with each other but aren’t allowed to be together due to particular differences
·         Red connoting love
·         White connoting purity

Look at the script of the original Alien film in class. How does the script compare to the finished product? Is the tension and atmosphere apparent in the script? How do they convey it on screen?

Script (ctrl+F and search for the word terminate) http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/alien_shooting.html
The difference between the clip and the script is the wording in the script. Ash says “I don't know.  At the moment the creature is keeping him alive. If we remove it we might terminate Kane...” however in the actual clip they shortened his lines and made him say “could kill him2 instead. I think they did this so they scenes do not become boring as they could lose focus from their audience. – It is important that the director tries to keep the focus of the audience at all times otherwise people tend to lose focus and will not be bothered to watch the rest of the film meaning they’ll get a bad response on it and low figures in the box office.

Now, watch the opening scenes from It Follows. Then, read the script for it and compare how the script and the film look and feel. What are the differences? What are the similarities?

Although there are some scenes which seem to be different within the movie the opening scene. Follows the script until the moment the woman is brutally killed by ‘It’. Costumes are also changed such as Annie’s heels. In the script Annie is described to be wearing red pumps but in the movie she’s seen wearing red heels.

Reading the article on Moodle called “What do we mean by cinematic story and form?” what is the purpose of a screenplay? Who performs the screenplay?

What does it mean to make a story ‘in the cut’?

Why is a screenplay described as an external form? What does this mean?

What does David Mamet describe as the three elements of a screenplay? Explain them in your own words.
